by Kaitlin Newman
TU Journalism Student | Oct 25th

Miles Doran, a senior at the University of Florida, reports and produces radio and TV news. He avidly uses Twitter to keep up-to-date on certain issues, ask opinions, and get the news quickly.

Miles Doran, reporter and producer answers questions about his frequent tweeting. Doran uses Twitter as a way to keep up on what people are talking about.

Q: How does Twitter benefit journalism, personal to you?

A: I think Twitter provides another source of information — a constant stream of information — from average people who are out there in the world. They share their observations about the world around them on Twitter and that makes it a valuable source for journalists.

Q: How has the internet overall helped you in becoming a journalist?

A: It’s a much easier way to get information, but also transmit articles, photos, and videos.

Q: What is your opinion on blogging vs. print?

A: Print — as in newspapers — are known for being more reliable, accurate, and impartial while bloggers are typically thought of as opinionated. That’s not to say that bloggers aren’t a good source of information, though.

Q: What do you think of the hyper-connectivity twitter brings to the social world? (by that i mean knowing things as soon as they happen)

A: I think it’s great to be tapped in to the pulse of the millions of Twitter users. But like all information, tweets need to be verified and fact-checked.

Q: Does tweeting make reporting helpful or is it just an information overload?

A: It is definitely helpful. From finding witnesses of events to seeing photos taken immediately after something happens, twitter is extremely helpful.

The streets are paved in construction workers. Everyone who drives a car has noticed the stop-and-go traffic encountered throughout every commute. Construction workers dot the roads like lane markings, making commuting to destinations a longer process than ever.

The Government Federal Stimulus Package is a large project with the order of $500 to $800 billion dollars targeted for the employment of citizens by having them work on public infrastructures. This has been nationally distributed, employing thousands of previously unemployed citizens.

This is all in an effort to employ America, to give jobs to those who are unemployed, while improving the roadways and structure of the country both literally and figuratively. This all may be better for the future, but right now it’s causing stress and confusion as people make their daily drives to work and school, especially in the Towson/Baltimore area.

Graffiti marks a bridge that is currently being torn down. Construction workers hold traffic up and make commutes twice as long as normal.

The expanding roads get smaller until they are complete. Causing problems for everyday civilians. “The roadwork seems like a contradiction because although they say it’s being done to help the citizens and to make travel easier, instead its just wasting money and clogging up the area,” said Ian Wilson, a frequent highway commuter.

The cones, construction workers, and signs that clog up the roadways have become a stationary sight for the time being and are expected to remain for a while. The work being done is a lengthy process and consists mainly of dismantling and rebuilding large public transportation structures such as bridges, exit ramps, and widening the road.

While many of the people employed are qualified to do this type of work, some are not. The projects being created are expected to last, not have to be redone in a decade and the only way that result can be achieved is by employing qualified people.

Employing untrained people for these jobs is a red flag to safety. “It’s a safety hazard to employ those who do not go through apprenticeships for these types of jobs just for the sake employing the nation; its only safe if those employed know what they’re doing.” Timothy Chisum, a local construction worker who has specialized training in this area. “When you learn these trades through an apprenticeship, you also learn valuable skills such as CPR,” said Chisum.

The outcome of the Government Federal Stimulus Package may be a great one, but a lengthy process must first be endured.

Melaleuca, an environmentally friendly product company, has sparked green interest among the community and it wasn’t just about the environment. A demonstration held on Tuesday, September 22nd educated students on how to go green and get paid while spreading the word to others.

Monte Hansen uses a visual to describe how Melaleuca gives back to it's consumers. The meeting had a great turnout and brought forth a lot of audience participation.

The meeting began with a video on what Melaleuca was all about, which is turning everyday products green in what they’re made of to how they are transported.
Melaleuca’s goal is to reduce household expenses and reward those who go green while also reducing environmental footprints.

Melaleuca has expanded its revenue to customers that spread the word to go green as an appreciation for doing so. Just by purchasing and referring friends to shop Melaleuca, customers can earn a residual income based on a commission from those who buy. Customers have earned anywhere from some extra spending money to a yearly income per month depending on how much effort and how many people they refer to Melaleuca.

This is a rewarding job for most because it is one where you can truly make a difference. “Look into all forms of income so your job can be your avocation, not your occupation,” said Monte Hansen, Marketing Executive for Melaleuca.

A job that makes you feel good about yourself when the day is done and inflicts a positive change in the world is what Melaleuca hopes to get across to students who want to earn some extra cash on a tight schedule.

The foundation of the business came from the idea that while poisoning the environment, humans are inadvertently poisoning themselves. The products that come from Melaleuca are made with thyme and citric acid as substitutions for harmful chemicals, such as bleach and phosphates. Melaleuca has a green alternative for everything from cleaning supplies to skincare.

The formulas Melaleuca uses are twice as concentrated as many of the big name brands, which cuts back on plastic packaging and fossil fuel usage for transportation. A popular product, Sustain, is a powdered energy drink that uses natural energy boosters that are healthy for the body all while diminishing the use of plastic bottles.

It is this train of thought that makes Melaleuca a truly green company, inside and out.
The meeting wrapped up with a sample demonstration of Melaleuca products to give students a taste of what Melaleuca is all about. The overall affect was a positive one, leaving many students to raise their hands as a signal to join the green movement Melaleuca has to offer.

Invisible Children, a humanitarian movement dedicated to raising awareness of the plight of children in Uganda, had the first meeting of the school year last week. The movement has been popular with many local musicians, who have been steadily raising awareness at shows and on campus.

Invisible Children make an impact from coast to coast.

There are ways to get involved with opportunities ranging in many areas of interest. Invisible Children is established of committees that dabble in arts, events and public relations. Meetings are held every Thursday in Lithicum Hall 116.

The effort is making headway with many students and it shows. “I would get involved with Invisible Children because it is a cause that helps less fortunate children. I think that by being involved at Towson University, Invisible Children will help raise awareness around campus and the community,” said Towson University sophomore Brittany Brothers.

Since it’s beginning on Towson University campus, Invisible Children has been able to raise money by holding events that draw the attention of students, such as the 20-mile walk that was held last year. Graphic video screenings, to show what words cannot describe, are an upcoming focal point. The first of three is scheduled to be shown shorty.

Invisible Children was originally started by a group of California filmmakers whose film adventure turned into a humanitarian quest that has taken hold on many more than the three students who saw it first. The goal of Invisible Children is to make an appearance from coast to coast and to educate everyone they touch to what is happening in our world and what must be done to help it.
